Woodard & Currran, Inc.

Ed Helmig is a Technical Manager with Woodard & Curran and has 38 years’ experience as an Environmental Engineer and Water & Wastewater Subject Matter Expert (SME). Relative to Emerging Contaminants (EC’s) Ed has developed and deployed numerous treatment solutions including a novel ultrasonic destruction process, UVperoxide systems, Granular Activated Carbon (GAC), and highperformance ozone systems. Most notably Ed led the team that developed, designed and demonstrated the first industrial wastewater treatment system capable of removing a broad range of active pharmaceutical ingredients (API’s) to non-detectable levels or <1 part per trillion. Ed has authored numerous technical papers and delivered technical solutions to manufacturing sites in 27 different countries around the world. Ed has BS in Environmental Engineering from Temple University where he is also a founding member of the Water Environment Technology (WET) Center that specializes in analytical methods and treatment technology for EC’s

FLASH POSTER PRESENTATION

EDC & PPCP removal from Wastewater-demonstrated full scale technical solutions

We provide and present the challenges and full scale, proven technical solutions including results for a $22MM MBR+Ozone treatment system currently operating in Ireland. Other technologies including carbon, advanced oxidation, and ultrasonic destruction of EDCs and PPCPs are discussed in the context of at-source vs end-of-pipe points of application. Analytical methods required for "proof of concept" including HPLC-MS-MS, Yeast Estrogen Receptor (YES) Assay and Mictotox are also presented. The audience will learn about what works and how to develop and demonstrate practical, real-world solutions.
